The First Classic Bass Champions Tour Event Saw Brian Wood Run Away for the Win
With the status of the fishery and the time of year, we all anticipated a shootout on Mille Lacs for the first Classic Bass Champions Tour event of the season. The results were still very impressive but a gusty 30-40MPH wind didn’t allow Mille Lacs to show out quite like one might think during the spawn. The lake fished fairly small as there were very few areas that weren’t being pounded by 3-4 foot waves. But the 24 Champions Tour anglers that hit the water Saturday morning are some of the best in the business. The smallmouth could run but they couldn’t hide, especially from Brian Wood.
Wood, a very experienced Mille Lacs smallmouth fisherman grinded through tough visibility conditions all day and stuck to a pattern that had him targeting smallmouth on beds with a drop shot rig. He consistently caught fish throughout the 1st and 2nd half, both in the SE corner of the lake and the west side. He caught 44 bass of 12″ or more that weighed 96 pounds. This total gave him the victory by a margin of nearly 25 pounds!
Wood boats a quality Mille Lacs smallmouth during the 2nd half of the day when Brian increased his lead for good.
