'Go To' Presentations
(seventh in a series)

by Bill Mathis

Part 7 is a summary of what we have uncovered in the first 6 sections of this series. My goal was to first, give new bass anglers some ideas on where to begin and secondly to give all readers a quick look at what some of the top pro’s as well as the up and comers in the state would use if they had to use only one bait.

The most popular presentation by a 2 vote margin with 6 votes was a jig/trailer. This was closely followed by a Senko or Dipstick presentation with 4 votes. With 2 votes we had a 4” tube bait and 2 votes for a spinnerbait. Other presentations with one vote were a Mimic Minnow, a jerkbait, roboworm and a rattle trap.

Colors for all these lures varied, but the predominant color was a natural color such as green pumpkin.

Here is a summary for each angler:

Loren Davidson: 4” tube, green pumpkin
Kurt Johnson: 5” senko, dark natural color
Steve Quinn: 4” tube bait, colors varied
Tom Whitehead: Jig/trailer, green pumpkin
Scott Bonnema: Listed 3 one for each season,
spinnerbait, jerkbait, jig
Joel Stokka: Dipstick
Travis Peterson: Dipstick
Chris Chinn: Mimic Minnow
Mitch Schade: Senko
Robert Weippert: Rattle Trap, crawfish color
Jason Dudek: 6” Roboworm
Jeremiah Shaver: Swim jig
Wayne Ek: Spinnerbait
Brian Brown: Jig, natural color
Clay Peterson: Jig/trailer
Bill Mathis: Jig/trailer, black red flake

One conclusion that you can make from this series is soft plastics are the bait of choice. We can also conclude that fishing slow is the way to go for most guys when left with one choice.

If I asked the question what is your favorite lure to catch fish with, I would most likely see many votes for some kind of top water lure. They can be great lures and are by far the most fun lures to use as there is nothing better than seeing a bass explode on top of the water. However, when the top waters or your favorite bait/lure isn’t working, try out what the pro’s and field staff at Classic Bass use for their go to bait.

I want to thank everyone for their input which allowed me to write up this series.

Good fishing to everyone this year.
