Fishing For Charity
by Bill Mathis

There are several events each year that pro’s and amateurs can fish a tournament that benefits a charity. All of them are for good causes and the people that organize these tournaments put in a lot of time and hard work.

Today I’d like to talk about a tournament that is entering its 24th year and why if you are going to fish one charity tournament this year, this is the one to fish. The tournament is the Camp Confidence Classic which is held every June on Gull Lake. This year’s event takes place on Saturday, June 16 out of Cragun’s Resort.

Confidence Learning Center is located just west of Brainerd on Sylvan Lake. The camp is a year-round outdoor recreation and education facility for people of all ages with developmental disabilities. On average they serve 11,000 camper days per year, which involved 11,257 volunteer hours in 2006. Confidence Learning Center is 100% privately funded through donations and fund raisers such as the fishing classic. It is their largest fund raising event each year. They receive no tax dollars or contributions from the government.

The fishing tournament consists of a professional angler or guide and 2 co-anglers in the boat. There are 4 divisions and you can pick which division you would like to fish. There is bass, walleye, pike and mixed bag divisions. The entry fee for a co-angler is $175. This includes 6 hours of fishing with a pro or guide, box lunch from Subway in Nisswa, awards presentation which includes a raffle drawing for some great prizes donated by businesses and individuals. The biggest winners are the campers as one co-angler entry fee pays for 3.9 campers to attend the camp for a day. Co-anglers also have the chance to fish with some legends in fishing as well as some of the top pros and guides in the state. Entry fees may be 100% tax deductible, please check with your tax advisor.

If you are professional angler or guide, Confidence Learning Center needs your help as well. Pro’s and guides do not pay an entry fee. They provide their boat, expertise, time, gas, oil, equipment, bait and anything else that provides the co-angler with a great fishing experience.
